DHLTU launches new Agroecological Laboratory to promote sustainable agriculture in West Africa

Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University (DHLTU) has officially launched a new Agroecological Laboratory in Wa, Ghana, as part of the AGRECOFARM – Agricultural Farming Master Programme for Sustainable Agriculture in West Africa project. The initiative, funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme, aims to strengthen agroecology education, research, and practical training in Ghana and across West Africa.

The laboratory will support the newly developed Master of Science programme in Agroecology, with a focus on key areas such as precision agriculture, organic crop and plant production, and conservation agriculture. In addition, the project will promote vocational education and training short courses for farmers, students, educators, and other stakeholders interested in sustainable and entrepreneurial approaches to agroecology.

Equipped with soil sampling and testing kits, precision agriculture tools, and drone technologies, the new facility will provide students and researchers with practical instruments to connect traditional agricultural knowledge with modern ecological and digital approaches.

The launch took place during an Agroecology Info Day and Internship Fair, which brought together representatives from research institutions, non-governmental organisations, students, and potential mentors and employers. The event highlighted the importance of linking academic training with field experience, internships, and professional opportunities in the agroecology sector.

Through this initiative, DHLTU and the AGRECOFARM consortium reaffirm their commitment to promoting sustainable farming systems, restoring degraded soils, conserving biodiversity, mitigating climate change, and empowering farming communities. The new Agroecological Laboratory represents an important step towards building resilient food systems and strengthening the role of African universities as knowledge hubs for sustainable agriculture.
