Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University (DHLTU) has commissioned a new Agroecology Laboratory in Wa, Ghana, within the framework of the AGRECOFARM – Agricultural Farming Master Programme for Sustainable Agriculture in West Africa project. The initiative, funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme, aims to promote agroecology education, research, and practical training in Ghana and across West Africa.
The laboratory will support the newly developed Master of Science programme in Agroecology, which focuses on key areas such as precision agriculture, organic crop and plant production, and conservation agriculture. The project will also introduce short vocational education and training courses for farmers, educators, students, and other stakeholders interested in developing practical and entrepreneurial skills in agroecology.
Equipped with soil sampling and testing kits, precision agriculture tools, and drone technologies, the new facility will help students and researchers connect traditional agricultural practices with modern ecological and digital approaches. In this way, the laboratory represents an important step towards strengthening applied learning, field-based research, and innovation in sustainable farming systems.
The commissioning took place during an Agroecology Info Day and Internship Fair, which brought together representatives from non-governmental organisations, research institutions, students, mentors, and potential employers. The event highlighted the importance of linking academic education with internships, professional development, and real-world experience in the agroecology sector.
Through this initiative, DHLTU and the AGRECOFARM consortium reaffirm their commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture, restoring degraded soils, conserving biodiversity, mitigating climate change, and empowering farming communities. The new Agroecology Laboratory will contribute to building resilient food systems and strengthening the role of African universities as knowledge hubs for agroecological transition in West Africa.
