DHLTU promotes agroecology education and sustainable farming through the AGRECOFARM project

Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University (DHLTU), Wa, is actively involved in the AGRECOFARM – AGRoECOlogical FARMing Master Programme, an international project funded by the European Union Erasmus+ Programme. The initiative brings together West African universities and European partners with the shared goal of strengthening agroecology education, practical training, and sustainable agricultural innovation across West Africa.

Through AGRECOFARM, DHLTU contributes to the development of skills and competences in agroecological techniques for sustainable agriculture, targeting academic staff, students, agricultural extension workers, and other key stakeholders. The project promotes an integrated approach that combines theoretical learning, field-based experience, vocational training, and transdisciplinary research.

The implementation of the project supports wider global and regional priorities, including the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate change, and the promotion of food and nutrition security, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and decent rural livelihoods.

A central objective of AGRECOFARM is to identify and promote suitable combinations of agroecological practices adapted to different farming systems and agroecological zones in Africa. By encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices among farmers and rural communities, the project aims to improve farm resilience, environmental sustainability, and the long-term viability of agricultural businesses.

The project also supports the creation of an appropriate learning environment for students enrolled in the new MSc Programme in Agroecology, helping them to understand and analyse complex agricultural systems through interdisciplinary and practice-oriented approaches. In addition, AGRECOFARM offers Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses to increase practical knowledge, hands-on experience, and stakeholder engagement.

Through its participation in AGRECOFARM, DHLTU reaffirms its commitment to building a new generation of agroecology professionals capable of contributing to climate action, sustainable food systems, and agricultural transformation in West Africa.
